STATEMENT

I was born in South Korea, but most of my childhood was spent growing up in the Philippines before settling in the UK in 2013. Prompted by transient and poetic moments in personal photographs, I paint intimate fragments that conjure feelings of remembering, displacement and introspection. Opting for the slow-looking afforded by a painting practice, my recent works capture something of the fleeting, intangible nature of memory.

With continued interest in ideas surrounding time, memory, belonging and the lived experience, I explore the subtle, preverbal sensations that relate to broader narratives of identity. Through layered texture and subtly interjecting elements in my compositions, figuration might be disrupted creating odd planes to be experienced individually, privately, and sensitively.
